Synthesis in Wiki, Weebly and PBWorks - Closure in Skype

Larissa Opramolla, Rosey Rawle-Pitter, Jerry Volpe and I had a successful Skype session while critiquing our curriculum unit plans. While the technology allowed us to discuss our units and view the Wiki, Weebly and PBWorks Unit documents, I am one to take cues from people while in their physical space.
The Technology
The technology is a wonderful tool to close the distance gap in countless ways. My 70 year-old mom skypes with my niece and nephew - reading them bedtime stories. This tool allowed me to connect and troubleshoot a vacation obstacle during the qualifying spelling bee for a recent student traveling in Hawaii - a definite positive as he is my stellar speller! It is a super tool for the 21st century.
The Units
Jerry made the comment during our session that, "we need a referee to control the discussion - excitement turns into white noise, with a bit of chaos." We would have preferred to meet in person in order to really be able to ask constructive questions within the feedback portion of our presentations. I felt the need to go back over the units afte our Skype session closed to review the components of my classmates. We all tried to give encouragement to our group; I was very impressed.
Jerry's unit organization depicted his linear style. His organization was easy to follow as he kept the navigation bar at the top of his PBWorks post. I am also a fan of the "tube" downloads. Middle schoolers perk up when they see a "tube" used as an initiation hook.
Rosey's weebly was very creative. I will definitely be investigating Weebly.com once I ask my tech support folds to unblock it for our use. I love the graphics options and potential to really create an elevated level of professionalism in the choice options for weebly.com users. If I were a student in her class I would be hooked in to the lessons on the cardiovascular system. I think it is especially supportive that her students can access her class notes to prepare for tests; her webquest and polls were a nice touch. Her students are fortunate to have her leading them to be science stars.
Larissa's wiki showed her dedication to her math mavens. Her incorporation of a relevant modern-day product in her student-centered performance task project, and use of the polls for her students, shows her love and attention to her subject and her students' ability to synthesize in a challenging subject. Her navigation bar and associated documents along with the very clear ties to differentiation for advanced learners and those needing support is very clear. I will definitely try the Google forms/exit slip idea with my students - love that! Navigating and viewing her many and varied elements for this extensive unit, is an exemplar for any high school math teacher - new to seasoned educator. She is a NETs 2.0 instructor. Her years of experience in the classroom, and her incorporation of the NETs-s and Nets-t for 21st century teaching and learning, was impressive.
28 Years!
Extensive teaching talent coming together - our mini Skype group has logged 28 years of teaching collectively. It's really very encouraging in this time when even Bill Gates is slamming our teaching profession publicly - we know he is 2.0, yet was responsible for teaching his two children for a year - really Bill? Really?
I appreciate the time my group invested in the Skype session and the positive feedback I received from them. After dedicating a great deal of my planning periods and time in hours of focused isolation, developing and uploading my wiki unit components and links, then recreating due to a navigation bar glitch, my classmates’ Skype encouragement was much needed and so appreciated. Being responsible for 5 of the 9 CMT tests (this week and next) at this same delivery time brought on some angst!
Bloom's and Digital Synthesis
Conclusively, this course moved me along Bloom's to 21st century teaching synthesis in just 8 short weeks. The expertise of our instructor - VJE, has me connected to all course links in my Favorites both at school and at home. The exposure and Constructivist learning requirement to delve into so many of the Nets-s and Nets-t / Web 2.0 / 21st century teaching and learning platforms, programs, tools and sharing opportunities, has rendered me prepared and ready to live and breat
he as a newly adopted digitally synthesized teacher and learner.
